About The Book

Will Abby See Whales Today? A Birthday Adventure is a book about a father taking his daughter on a whale watching adventure for her birthday. Follow Abby on her exciting whale watching experience.  This book is a personal narrative, showing the deep bond that is created between father and daughter during their special time together. It is a perfect mentor text for teachers to use when they teach the personal narrative unit. Children will be motivated to write their own personal narratives.

The book also addresses the dangers marine animals face today and is sure to inspire readers to become marine conservationists and climate change activists.

In the book, you will find a page titled, "Ten Interesting Facts About Whales." Students can use this information as a starting point for researching more interesting facts about whales or another endangered species. There is a glossary page to enhance students' vocabulary, and a page with student activities to extend learning after reading the book.

"This charming book will inspire its readers to become enthusiastic marine conservationists.  The author gives context and meaning to the plea to save whales and protect marine life.  Throughout the book, a purposeful and accessible message pervades regarding the conservation of our oceans and our planet. A must read for children, parents, teachers and all nature lovers who wish to protect the creatures living in this vast expanse of blue and the ecosystems that support them."

"…the overall readability of the text and educational material at the end make it well suited for classrooms.”

- Kirkus Reviews

Our second grade classes had the opportunity to have Mrs. Klein present her book, Will Abby See Whales Today? A Birthday Adventure virtually to our students.  As Mrs. Klein read her book she actively engaged her listeners by involving them throughout her reading.  Throughout her read aloud, Mrs. Klein discussed her use of the author's craft as she wrote her story, and how this makes her story a personal narrative.  She explained to the students different strategies that they can use to help support them as they become writers.  The students mentioned to the teachers after her presentation that this was something they enjoyed during her visit with the classes.  Students that have the opportunity to have a virtual visit with Mrs. Klein will appreciate their high level of interaction with her, and will value the conversation she engages them in during the presentation.
